Cut wire shot is often bought as-is (with sharp edges), conditioned (rounded edges), and specially conditioned (nearly spherical). it's also possible to get cut wire shot made of different metals like zinc or copper. Cut wire shot is designated by the diameter of a wire utilized in thousandths of an inch.

Size of Shot

When other factors, like shot velocity and exposure time, are constant, a rise in shot size leads to an increase in peening intensity and depth of the compressed layer, plus a decrease in coverage. Selecting the minimum shot size capable of manufacturing the specified intensity is preferable to require the advantage of a more rapid rate of coverage obtained with a smaller shot. the choice of a specific shot size could also be dictated by the shape of a neighborhood to be peened.

In shot peening of fir-tree serrations of steel compressor blades, complete coverage is often obtained as long as the radius of an attempt doesn't exceed the radius of serrations. an equivalent principle applies to a variety of shot sizes for peening a root radius of threads. When peening fillets, the diameter of the shot used shouldn't exceed one-half the radius of the fillet.

Hardness of Shot

Variations within the hardness of the shot don't affect peening intensity, provided an attempt is harder than a workpiece. If the shot is softer than the workpiece, a decrease in intensity occurs.

Velocity of Shot

Peening strength increases with shot velocity; But, when velocity is increased, the shot must be examined for breakdown more regularly to purge the system of the broken shot.
