Powder Flame Spray Gun

The process is essentially the spraying of molten material onto a surface to produce a coating. The substance in powder form is melted during a flame (oxy-acetylene or hydrogen most commonly) to form a fine spray. When the spray touches the substrate, the fine molten droplets quickly solidify, forming a coating.

Powder Flame Spray Gun

The powder flame spray gun method is similar to the wire flame spray gun process with the difference, that powder and not a wire is injected into the flame. This gives a much wider range of coating element options than the wire flame spray process. The powdered material is fed continuously into the fuel gas-oxygen flame where it is typically melted or semi-melted by the heat of combustion. A powder feed carrier gas transports the powder particles into the combustion flame, and therefore the gases transport the substance towards the prepared workpiece surface. Standard preferences for fuel gases are acetylene or hydrogen.

Features of Powder Flame Spray Gun

  • A relatively high degree of oxidation in the coating.
  • Moderate tensile strength.
  • Good compressive strength.
  • Low production properties.
  • Versatile and with a wide choice of materials.
  • Relatively inexpensive thermal spraying process.
  • A transportable process, spraying on location is possible.

Features of Fused Coating

  • Metallurgical bond with the substrate.
  • Resistant to the line and point loads.
  • Low resistance to impact loads.
  • Homogeneous and closed structure.

Typical Coatings

  • Nickel-based alloys.
  • Various stainless steel alloys.
  • Cermets, carbides (hard metals).
  • Ceramic coatings (oxides).
  • Abradable coatings.

Applications of Powder Flame Spray Gun

  • Sealing moving surfaces to prevent seals from leaking.
  • Improvement of wear resistance and chemical protection of ball valves.
  • Boiler walls of incinerators against high-temperature erosion and chemical degradation.
  • Repairs and dimension corrections of worn drive shafts and bearing seatings with nickel-based alloys.
